Eating well when unwell

Assortment of fruit and vegetables arranged in a heart shape

Nutrition should be an important and obligatory part of your plan of care when diagnosed with GI cancers. Nutritional focus should be given in both pre and post-operative periods, not just during treatment. Maintaining a healthy diet and active lifestyle is an important part of surviving with and after cancer. While there is not guarantee that it can completely prevent recurrence of your disease, taking active steps to ensure you are being your best and healthiest self can greatly improve your quality of life.

Preventative measures:

  • Healthy dietary habits have proven to aid in prevention of GI cancers
  • Eat a substantial amount of fruits and vegetables regularly
  • Alcohol consumption and obesity are factors that can contribute to GI cancers and should be limited
