Connection and Community Through the Ruesch Early Age Onset Group

On Sunday, August 30, members of the Early Age Onset Advisory Group came together for its second gathering, enjoying an afternoon of conversation, laughter, games, and connection at The Board Room in DC.

The group brings together GI cancer patients and survivors who were diagnosed before age 50, along with their spouses, families, and caregivers. Participants rated the gathering as “extremely valuable,” highlighting the importance of connecting with others who understand their experiences.

One participant shared, “Speaking to other young gastric cancer patients and feeling less alone. Talking about shared experiences was truly helpful.” Others described a “sense of kinship” and the value of hearing about both similar and different experiences. Another participant described the group as “a fun and meaningful gathering of people who are walking through different phases of a painful life experience that they’re working to find recovery and meaning in.”

The gathering was also a chance to simply have fun together. As one participant shared, “Jokes came as easily as shared experiences about surgeries or oncologists.” When asked what they would say to someone considering a future gathering, one participant offered a simple invitation: “Come for community and genuine connection.”

Participants are already looking ahead, suggesting future activities including pottery and creative classes, museums, games, concerts, hiking, biking, a Nationals game, and group wellness activities.

This gathering was made possible through the generosity of the Wyatt N Smith Fund, whose support is helping create opportunities for connection, friendship, and quality of life for young adults affected by GI cancer.

We look forward to continuing to grow the Ruesch Community Social Group and creating more opportunities to connect, share, and find moments of joy and meaning together.
